Back to fiction: the best laid plans of mice and men

Hello, Jenny here.

Thanks so much for following, reading and supporting Life Writing over the past year. But I have some news.

I wholeheartedly believe in everything I’ve written on this site about the power and importance of true life storytelling… but fiction has come back into my life in a big way.

I am a first draft along the path to publishing the first in a supernatural sleuthing series, so I’ve had a big think and decided that the fiction writing is where I need to put my efforts and energies at the moment. So that’s what I’m going to do.

This is a surprising turn of events because my fiction novel isn’t autobiographical or derived from my personal true life stories. It is based on my real life experiences, thoughts, feelings and desires of being a human being – as all fiction is. It isn’t the story of me – though it is about things that are important to me. None of the characters are exactly like me – but I share some traits with many of them. It is set in the 90s – and in many ways so am I! – but there’s nothing memoir about it. This is fiction. Magic realism, even. So I owe it to the work and my publishing goals to give it my full attention.

Here’s the blurb:

What happens when everyone is asleep?

Something strange is happening in Shilly-on-Sea but a secret, more shocking, lies just around the corner…

Dan, skeptic journalist and professional debunker, is en route – armed with journals, floppy disks and a car boot full of Amstrad home computer. Reed, a mysterious drifter, is also heading to the sleepy seaside town – driving pedal-to-the-metal as fast as his VW camper van will tolerate on a quest that only he can understand. Zoya, who has been there all along, keeps watch and dreams of distant adventures of her own.

When a crime is discovered and the police are getting nowhere, can a spot of snooping save the day? What’s the secret of the kooky house on the hill, who’s been hiding in the garden and what happens when everyone is asleep?

This quirky, supernatural sleuthing mystery, is the genesis story of a new private investigator series that invites the reader on a journey from sandy beaches to vertiginous rooftops and anywhere in between…

I will be looking for beta readers in due course and if free review copies are your bag, please join my book mailing list.
